How To Do PS4 Port Forwarding – Step By Step Guide

There are so many PS4 users who need to change NAT type on their PS4 to get better performance. If you don’t know how to change NAT type on PS4 on PS4 please don’t try to change NAT type without knowledge.

If you’re trying to get NAT Type 2 on your PS4 for better gaming performance, this post can help you. The first step is going to be to set up a port forward to get NAT Type 2 on your PS4.

Port Forwarding is used to allow external devices (PSN) to connect to your internal devices (PS4). With port forwarding, you can easily tell the router where to forward the packets that are meant for your PS4 for example.

If you know about the firewall on your device, by default the firewall is always opened and secure your device from the hacker. When you disable the firewall a hacker could gain access to your network easily. If you’re opening and forwarding specific ports in your firewall you can safely run a web server or FTP server on your computer or host or join in online games and get better performance.

What is Port Forwarding?

When you forwarding a port, you can make a computer or other network device accessible from the internet. For example Security Camera. You only allow specific traffic (that comes through a port number) to travel into your network to the network device (or computer). This is commonly used for security cameras, gaming, hosting a (web)server or making you NAS accessible from the internet.

By default, the firewall in the router will block all unknown incoming traffic. If our friends try to join our game, a package is sent through port 3074. But our firewall has no idea who needs that, so it will drop the package.

By setup a port forwarding rule your router, you can tell the router to forward all data package that is sent through port 3074 to forward it to your game console. Then the PlayStation will handle the data further.

How To Do Port Forwarding on PS4?

Login To Your Router

To do port forwarding you need to access your router’s admin panel which you’re using for your PS4. There are so many router types in the market. I don’t recommend you to use a specific router or company’s router. You can choose yourself, but before to buy the router once please check reviews about that router.

To login to your router, you need a login username and password which is the default by the router’s company. If you’re previously changed the username and password, login with them in the browser (Chrome, Mozilla Firefox) which you’re using. But most of the features are not available on the other browser so I recommend you to use Chrome or Mozilla Firefox browser for better user experience.

To log in, you need to know what is your router’s IP address. If you don’t know the default IP address of your router, open run command or press Window key+R and type cmd then type ipconfig and press enter. Then you’ll find there default gateway, which you need to access the router on your browser for ps4 port forwarding.

On the above picture, the default gateway is 19.168.31.1 but most of the router’s default gateway is 192.168.1.1 shown as below:

When you put the default gateway on your browser, you’ll go to the login panel where you need to put the router’s username and password. Type there username and password to enter the router.

Setting up Port Forwarding

Now, you need to find the port forwarding section. According to the different companies and brands device (router), it’s placed on the different sections. Here I write some common places where it can be:

  • Advanced > Port Forwarding
  • Applications > Gaming
  • Advanced > virtual server
  • Firewall > Port Forwarding
  • Virtual Servers
  • Apps and Gaming
  • Under the Firewall Section
  • Under the Security Section
  • LAN > Port Forwarding

In the below picture it’s placed on Apps and Gaming under the security section. As like this you need to find on your router where is it placed.

When you found the port forwarding page on your router you can add a new forwarding rule. Most routers will have a similar layout, you enter the Original port, this is the port number as listed by the application, then you required protocol, when in doubt, just set it to both.

The forward-to address or Ip Address is the network device you want to give access, in this case, the Ip Address of the PlayStation and the internal port number (which you can leave the same as the original in general).

If you need or you want to open multiple ports you can do this easily. But if multiple ports features are not available on your router you cannot do this. If your router has the multiple port forwarding feature, open a range, by entering 2074-3080 or multiple by separating them with a comma 3074, 3075, 3076, etc. If your router doesn’t support it, you need to create multiple port forwarding rules manually.

Port Forwarding Test

When you created the multiple port forwarding rules on your router, you just need to check and test if the settings are working properly or not (correct or not). It’s very easy to check the settings are correct or not when you check you get access then the settings are correct. If that isn’t possible you can use one of the many online port forwarding checkers.

Port Forwarding for PS4

To setup port forwarding on your PS4, first, you need to give it a static IP address. Otherwise, it’ll get a new IP address when you restart or turn off your PS4.

How to Setup Static IP Address?

  • From the Main menu open the settings > Network > Set up Internet Connection
  • Depending on how you connected the PS4, choose Wifi or LAN Cable > CustomManual
  • Select the IP Address and press X
  • Change the last part of the IP Address to another number, let’s say 143.
  • So your IP address may look like 192.168.0.143
  • You can leave Subnet Mask, Gateway and DNS as they where.
  • Click Next
  • Leave the MTU on Automatic
  • Select Do Not Use for the Proxy Server
  • Select Test Internet Connection

When its done (Test Internet Connection) successfully, you can now forward the following ports to your PS4:

  • TCP: 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480
  • UDP: 3478, 3479

Now, depending on your router’s company or brand, you need to create the following forwarding rules:

To do PS4 port forwarding, it’s not so hard. But before port forwarding, you need to know some knowledge on how to PS4 port forwarding? Without the knowledge, the settings will be broke up and even you cannot able to use the internet connection on your other devices.

Keep in mind, you need to do keep a static IP Address and forward the correct port numbers to the new IP Address.

If you have devices that require the same port number you can use different ones on the external side and map the correct port number internally. Always make sure you open only the required port number for the device, otherwise, you will make your network vulnerable for hackers.

Common Questions & Answers Asked on PS4 Port Forwarding

1. Does port forwarding help ps4?
Port forwarding is linked to NAT – it’s actually an application of it. Port forwarding allows online gaming servers to connect to your PS4 console, which is part of a local-area network. The router you’re using to connect your PS4 console to the Internet usually handles NAT automatically.

2. What ports need to be open for ps4?
PS4 requires these ports to be open: Port 80 (TCP), Port 443 (TCP), Port 1935 (TCP), Port 3478-3480 (TCP), Port 3478-3479 (UDP).

3. Is DMZ safe for ps4?
While consoles are usually safe to place into the DMZ, you should be aware that it will not be protected by your router’s security measures in the DMZ. Be aware that you may need to configure a static IP address for your PS4 to ensure that your DMZ settings work continuously.

4. Which NAT type is best for ps4?
NAT type 1 ps4 is Best for PS4 but not good at the point of security. It is similar to having DMZ enable so all the ps4 ports are open and it may lead to a security threat to your network. This ps4 nat type is best for gaming but not for router security purposes.
